Ha Giang Loop: 7-Day Motorcycle Adventure In Far North

Seven days. Hanoi to Ba Be, via the Ha Giang Loop, Ban Gioc Waterfall, and Thac Ba Lake. This is one of the most complete motorbike routes in northern Vietnam, covering high mountain passes, remote ethnic villages, ancient market towns, and jungle waterways in a single connected journey.

You ride north out of Hanoi and the road opens up fast. The passes above Dong Van demand your full attention. The limestone karst of the Ha Giang plateau gives way to the flat mirror of Thac Ba Lake and then to the raw border country around Ban Gioc. Each section rides differently, and each one earns its place in the route.

Nights are spent in ethnic comfortable homestays with Hmong and Dao families, eating what the kitchen prepares. The final stretch into Ba Be National Park trades altitude for water, dense jungle canopy, and a stillness that makes the earlier passes feel even more earned.

7 day motorbike tour to northern Vietnam including the Ha Giang loop, from Hanoi

Day 1: Hanoi – Vu Linh (180km / 110Miles)

Early start out of Hanoi. The road north follows the Red River for a stretch before opening into the kind of riding that makes you stop checking the time. The first real stop is Thac Ba Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in Vietnam and genuinely worth the stop before the route turns onto rougher trail toward Vu Linh village.

Vu Linh sits on the lake’s edge and is home to a Dao community who run the homestay for the night. Dinner is cooked in the family kitchen. The lake is visible from the eating area. It is a grounded, quiet first night that sets the right pace for what comes next.

Day 2: Vu Linh – Ha Giang (170km / 105Miles)

Out of Vu Linh, the road heads north through quiet villages, mountain streams, and ridgelines that keep stacking up the further you ride. The monkey bridge crossing breaks up the day in the best possible way.

By evening, Ha Giang city. The night is spent in a Hmong resort with a family-cooked meal and an early night before the loop begins in the morning.

Day 3: Dong Van (170km /105Miles)

Out of Ha Giang, the road climbs into the Tham Ma Pass. The turns come fast and the views open wide on both sides. It is the kind of riding the loop is known for and it delivers early.

By late afternoon the route drops into Dong Van, an old market town sitting deep in the karst plateau. Hotel night here. Walk the old quarter after dinner and get an early sleep before the best riding of the trip.

Day 4: Meo Vac – Bao Lac (120km / 75Miles)

The day starts with Ma Pi Leng Pass. The road cuts along the cliff edge above the Nho Que River, the drop is serious and the views match it. Below the pass, a single track runs along the riverbank and puts the riding in a completely different register. Lunch in Meo Vac, then a bamboo raft down the Nho Que before the final stretch to Bao Lac. Overnight at home-stay.

Day 5: Ban Gioc Waterfalls (200km /125Miles)

The ride from Bao Lac winds through the kind of mountain roads that make the kilometres disappear. A stop at Nui Thung Mountain breaks up the day with a wide view across the northern highlands before the route continues to the border.

Ban Gioc Waterfall sits on the Vietnam-China border and is as big and loud as advertised. Tonight’s base is Sai Gon Ban Gioc Resort, right on the waterfall’s doorstep.

Day 6: Ba Be Lake (180km / 110Miles)

Morning starts with a visit to Nguom Ngao Cave, one of the largest cave systems in Vietnam, before the road south to Ba Be National Park.
Ba Be is best seen from the water. A boat trip through the lake covers corners that the road never reaches, jungle peaks dropping straight to the waterline. Evening brings a traditional dance performance by the local Tay community before settling into the lakeside homestay for the night.

Day 7: Scenic ride back to Hanoi (220km /137Miles)

We start the morning with a farewell to Ba Be Lake and ride back toward Hanoi. The winding roads and mountain scenery remind us of the adventures we’ve just lived. As the city comes closer, the calm of the countryside gives way to Hanoi’s energy. By late afternoon, we roll into the capital, bringing our motorbike journey full circle—carrying home unforgettable memories of Northern Vietnam’s landscapes, roads, and cultures.
