We take you on single tracks and dirt roads through the mountains of Northern Vietnam including Ha Giang, Northwest and northeast and many more. VMT’s years of experience and exploring, given the team knowledge of all the back roads and small villages that make for a great multi-day adventure.

The itineraries on our Northern Vietnam motorbike tours
The areas and destinations we usually cover on our adventures rides, are divided into two part:

- We take your wish-list places and add them into the itinerary
Along the border with China, from Ba Be Lake, explore the hill-tribe areas of Bao Loc up to the frontline backroads to see the Ban Gioc waterfall, and take back roads to Ha Giang province to visit colorful hill-tribe markets and extraordinary landscape as we ride up the high mountains areas.
For more dirt ride, we take routes where there’s less tourist, we past Hoang Su Phi and the rice terraces, wild rivers, and trails to Xin Man and over Sapa. See our Vietnam best motorbike tours
Here we may add a rest day in Sapa, then, we ride toward the west to Mu Cang Chai and off-road tracks through the mountains to Moc Chau and Mai Chau Valley before making our way back to Hanoi. And, because everyone is asking, the nearest airport is the Noi Bai International Airport, in Hanoi.
Northern Vietnam Off-Road Adventure Ride
On these Vietnam off-road adventures, we take the back-roads and tracks along the border with China, we often stop for lunch in a local eateries or the small markets along the way, a good way to interact with smiling locals minorities.
As we continue the ride, we head up to the Dong Van plateau of Ha Giang. See markets, colorful hill-tribes, and extraordinary landscape.
We continue past Bac Ha and the rice terraces, maybe river crossing, and ride the trails toward the Lao Cai, Lai Chau and or a rarely visited areas, Mường Tè and Muong Nhe, where we require a special permit.
Then we head through the mountains to Dien Bien Phu, where we visit the army hill A1 and the victory site, continue to Ngoc Chien and Mai Chau by ferry crossing before we end the ride to Hanoi. That’s how the off-road adventures shapes in northern Vietnam.
Driving License Requirement to ride in northern Vietnam
We require that you have your home country motorbike license along with the IDP to join one of our tours. Also, you must have personal health insurance to cover you in case of accident or illness.
- Passports and Visa
You must have a valid passport with 6 months left before the expiry date to obtain a tourist visa. Our tours are included visa support as well.
- Comprehensive Damage Insurance Optional
This insurance policy covers loss, theft, or any damage to the motorbike caused by an accident or fall.
The policy excludes personal medical insurance, liability to other vehicles, or injury caused to another party.
Recommended motorbikes for Northern Vietnam
We have a variety of fleets available for Northern Vietnam motorbike tours.
For the on-road and ride along the backroads, we suggest the Honda XR150 or XR190. They are very similar in performance and suitable for mountain roads, back-roads, and long-distance riding.
For the light weight adventure bike, we recommend the Honda CB500X. We equip it with side box and soft pannier for longer rides through the mountains and hill-tribe areas.
And, for the off-road adventures, we rely on the Honda CRF250 or CRF300. Although the XR series can handle the off-road tracks and mountain trails, other options include the WR155 or KLX250.
The Best Time for a Northern Vietnam Motorcycle Tour
Seriously saying, there is no best time, if rain is your biggest challenge, then Vietnam is always raining, even in dry season we expect a rain. So, the best time to tour Northern Vietnam by motorcycle is generally from October to April, during the dry season.
March to April offers mild weather, green landscapes, and flowers blooming across the countryside. October to November brings cool temperatures and golden rice terraces in Ha Giang, Sapa, and Mu Cang Chai.
During this period, roads are generally dry with clear skies and comfortable riding conditions through the mountains and highlands.
