Dien Bien Phu Motorbike Tour 8 Days

Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu by motorbike on 8 days, this is a ride that runs from Hanoi into the far northwest of Vietnam, covering over 1500+ kilometers of mountain roads and backroads through Thai, Hmong, and Muong villages before dropping into the valley where the French were defeated in 1954.

At Dien Bien Phu, riders visit the Battle Historical Site, walk A1 Hill, and stand inside the command bunker of General de Castries. The fortifications remain where the fighting ended.

8 day Itinerary: Dien Bien Phu Motorbike Tour

Day 1: Hanoi to Pu Luong via Mai Chau (160km / 99 miles)

Leave Hanoi in the morning on backroads south into Pu Luong, a lesser known nature reserver. Ride through Mai Chau valley past Thai villages and terraced fields, and lush forests, arrive in the afternoon, check in to our home-stay.

Day 2: Phu Yen via Van Yen Ferry for river crossing (270 km / 160 miles)

Leave Pu Luong after breakfast on backroads through ethnic minority villages and terraced hillsides. Cross the Black River on the Van Yen Ferry, then ride the final stretch into Phu Yen by late afternoon. Overnight at a local hotel.

Day 4: Phu Yen to Ngoc Chien, or Mu Cang Chai (180 km / 110 miles)

Leave Phu Yen after breakfast on backroads climbing into the hills above the Black River valley. The riding gets rougher as you push north through remote terrain and small villages. Arrive in Ngoc Chien by late afternoon, where the terraced rice fields drop off the ridgelines in every direction. Overnight at a comfortable resort, or homestay.

Day 4: Ride to Sin Ho (190 km / 120 miles)

Depart Mu Cang Chai or Ngoc Chien in the morning on mountain tracks through Hmong villages and forested ridges & dirt trails. The route is remote and the roads are narrow. Arrive in Sin Ho by late afternoon, one of the least visited towns in the northwest. Overnight at a local guesthouse.

Day 6: Sin Ho to Dien Bien Phu (155 km / 95 miles)

Leave Sin Ho after breakfast on off-road trails descending toward the Muong Thanh basin. The riding is technical in places but the views open up as you drop in altitude. Arrive in Dien Bien Phu by by lunch time. Check in, short rest, then visit the battlefield relic complex, walk A1 Hill, and see the command bunker of General de Castries.

In 1954, Viet Minh forces under General Vo Nguyen Giap defeated the French garrison at Dien Bien Phu, ending French colonial rule in Indochina. General Giap commanded the operation from a secret base at Muong Phang, near the Laos border. The battle was decided by strategy and terrain, not firepower alone.

Day 6: Ride to beautiful Sapa via Muong Lay (190 km / 118 miles)

Depart Dien Bien Phu in the morning on mountain roads heading northeast through Lai Chau via Muong Lay. The route climbs back into high terrain before dropping into the Muong Hoa valley above Sapa. Arrive by late afternoon. Overnight at a comfortable hotel in Sapa.

Day 7: A day to explore Sapa

Spend the morning in Sapa, visiting local markets and Cat Cat Village. After lunch, ride down to Ta Van village and a few other local hamlets, rice terraces where local ethnic peoples call home. The other option is to process to cable car to summit the Mt.Fansipan, this alone takes half a day. The day is free at our own plan and the tour is private, we can always discuss and decide where to visit and what to do on spot.

Day 8: Sapa – Hanoi on 8 day Dien Bien Phu Motorcycle Tour (300 km / 185 miles)

Take the last day ride through the mountain passes to Vu Linh, stop for lunch and then carry on the final leg to Hanoi. Arrive around 5pm, departure and end of the 8 amazing days motorcycle ride to Dien Bien Loop from Hanoi.
