9 Day Hanoi to Hoi An Motorbike Tour along the Ho Chi Minh Trail

9 Days Hanoi to Hoi An along the Ho Chi Minh Highway, one of the most historically loaded and scenically demanding road trips in Southeast Asia.

The road follows the route of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail, the supply network that moved troops and equipment through the mountains during the Vietnam War. The jungle, the passes, and the DMZ sites along this road carry that history in a way that a museum cannot replicate. You ride through it rather than past it.

The route covers rugged mountain sections, river valleys, remote jungle stretches, and coastal lowlands before finishing in Hoi An. The landscape shifts constantly over nine days and so does the character of the riding.

9 Day Motorcycle Tour from Hanoi to Hoi An on Ho Chi Minh Trail

Day 1: Hanoi to Phu Yen (180km / 110Miles)

We kick off the first day of our Hanoi to Phu Yen Motorbike Tour on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Leaving the city, we follow the Red River toward Son Tay, then ride through peaceful countryside roads until we reach Phu Yen in Son La, home to stunning mountains, green jungles, and rolling hills that look like a painting. Ride through Quang Huy & Gia Phu commune. For some chilling time, we can relax by the Black River, or perhaps cool down in the water.

Day 2: Mai Chau (145km / 90Miles)

Get ready for another day ride. We ride south, crossing the Black River by Van Yen ferry before riding up to Moc Chau Plateau. Then carry on toward Hua Tat Pass with its sharp curves and raw mountain beauty. By afternoon, we roll into Mai Chau, a peaceful valley of rice fields, caves, and stilt-house villages.

Day 3: Tan Ky (290km / 180Miles)

Mai Chau to Tan Ky on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Start the day by riding along the scenic Ma River, later stop in Cam Thuy for lunch. From there, the road leads us onto the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail. A short ride away, Hong Son Waterfall tumbles 120 meters like a flowing silk curtain, a hidden gem of Nghe An province.

Day 4: Phong Nha (280km / 175Miles)

After breakfast, we ride along the Ho Chi Minh Highway toward Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, home to the world’s longest underground river and spectacular stalactites. Arrive later in the afternoon, check in at our lodge, and relax by the pool.

Day 5: Khe Sanh (300km / 185Miles)

A somehow long but exciting riding day. We start to ride deep into the Ho Chi Minh Trail, crossing Truong Son valley and a suspension bridge before heading toward the DMZ site and the Vinh Moc Tunnel. We serve lunch at a nearby restaurant, then carry on again toward the western Ho Chi Minh road where we barely see anything or anyone, crossing lush jungles to Khe Sanh.

Day 6: Imperial Hue (180km / 110Miles)

In the morning, we visit Ta Con Airport Museum. This small yet captivating museum showcases a collection of relics, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of Vietnam’s aviation resistance during the war.

After the visit, carry on to Hue.

Day 7: Hoi An via Hai Van Pass (120km / 75Miles)

In the morning, we check out from hue and ride to visit a ghost town cemetery. Then we ride toward Hoi An passing through the ocean of clouds on the Hai Van Pass.

On the way, we stop in Da Nang to see the Marble Mountains, five limestone hills tied to Vietnam’s ancient beliefs. By late afternoon, we roll into the charming lantern town of Hoi An, where we settle down for the night.

Day 8: Kham Duc (122km / 70Miles)

Hoi An to Kham Duc Motorbike Tour. We start the ride from the lantern town of Hoi An, heading west through quiet countryside into the cool mountain air. The first stop is My Son Sanctuary, where ancient Cham temples stand hidden in the jungle.

The road then winds through passes and thick forests with stunning valley views. At midday, we pause at a local war memorial along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a moving reminder of Vietnam’s history. The final stretch to Kham Duc is pure adventure with curvy mountain roads, lush landscapes, and friendly villages waving us through.

Once a U.S. Special Forces base, Kham Duc is now a peaceful mountain town where we end the day with history, culture, and natural beauty combined.
