We leave Hanoi’s busy streets and ride north toward the calm waters of Hong Son Lake, where islands rise against limestone peaks and forested hills. The smooth road carries us through changing landscapes before we arrive in the welcoming valley of Mai Chau. After a chance to explore, we enjoy dinner followed by a vibrant Thai dance performance, ending the day in the warmth of traditional stilt-house hospitality.

Day 2: Mai Chau – Phu Yen (250 km / 155 miles

Enjoy the breakfast and a fresh up of coffee, pack and ride out of Mai Chau toward the cool highlands of Moc Chau, a town famous for its tea plantations and vibrant mix of ethnic communities. We pause here for lunch and the chance to sample fresh local tea before continuing on the quieter Road 43.

The route takes us along the Da River and across the Van Yen ferry, then winds through mountain roads with sweeping views. By late afternoon, we reach Phu Yen, a small town in Son La Province, where a simple homestay welcomes us for an authentic night in the Northwest.

Day 3: Phu Yen – Nghia Lo (160 km / 100 miles

We leave Phu Yen in the morning and ride toward the legendary Lung Lo Pass, a 15-kilometer stretch of winding road steeped in history. Once a vital supply route during the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign, the pass now stands as a national heritage site in Yen Bai Province.

The ride demands focus, but the sweeping views and cultural significance make every turn unforgettable. By late afternoon, we roll into Nghia Lo, where a comfortable hotel offers a well-earned rest.

Day 4: Nghia Lo – Mu Cang Chai (130 km / 80 miles

We ride out of Nghia Lo into mountain country, where tea plantations blanket rolling hills and peaks rise on the horizon. The road takes us over Khau Pha Pass, one of Northern Vietnam’s four great passes, with plenty of chances to pause for sweeping views. Passing through the scenic Tu Le Valley, we reach Mu Cang Chai, famed for its terraced rice fields—now a national heritage site and home to the Hmong people.

Their traditions and vibrant attire color the landscape, making it a dream for photographers. By evening, we settle into a Thai family homestay for an authentic cultural stay.

Day 5: Mu Cang Chai – Sapa (160 km / 100 miles

Depart Mu Cang Chai and ride through the jaw-dropping Quy Ho Pass, where clouds drift across towering peaks and sweeping views unfold over tea, corn, and rice fields. The winding road delivers both challenge and reward before leading us into Sapa, a beloved highland town. Here we visit the iconic Stone Church, a colonial-era landmark and striking backdrop for photos, then wander through bustling markets alive with ethnic minority cultures.

As evening falls, we settle into a welcoming Sapa homestay for a true taste of local life.

Day 6: Sapa – Free & Easy day on your own

We leave Sapa early and ride through the Muong Hoa Valley, passing riverside villages of the Hmong, Zay, and Red Dao. Rice paddies line the way, perfect for photos.

By afternoon, we reach Bac Ha and explore its vibrant market—one of the most authentic in northern Vietnam. Here, Flower Hmong, Dao, Tay, Nung, and Phu La gather to trade fabrics, handicrafts, livestock, and share rice liquor over steaming bowls of soup.

If time allows, we trek to Flower Hmong villages before ending the day with dinner in a traditional Tay stilt house, a warm dive into local culture.

Read on your own to enjoy the ethnic town, or spend the day riding around Sapa’s winding mountain roads, with stops at Cat Cat and Ta Phin villages to meet ethnic minority communities and enjoy sweeping valley views.
