Ride through Northwest Vietnam on an 8-day off-road motorcycle loop from Hanoi

The route passes through the tea plantations of Moc Chau, climbs to the cloud-hunting viewpoint at Ta Xua’s Dinosaur spine, and winds through the terraced rice fields of Mu Cang Chai. H’mong villages, hard-packed dirt tracks, and remote mountain passes make this a true Northwest Vietnam loop adventure for experienced riders.

A true off-road tracks includes quiet countryside roads, hard-packed dirt, and rutted local tracks and steam crossing.

The northwest moves differently to the north, with wider valleys, longer passes, and the terraced rice fields of Mu Cang Chai stretching across the mountains. Tour Itinerary: 8 Days 7 Nights True Off-road Looping Northwest Vietnam

Day 1: Pu Luong | 150 Km

Leave Hanoi in the morning and ride southwest through the rural landscapes, passing rice fields, limestone hills, and traditional villages in Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces. Stop for lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant along the route before continuing into Pu Luong Nature Reserve, one of the most scenic mountain regions in Thanh Hoa. Arrive in Pu Luong in the late afternoon, take time to explore the surrounding valley and terraced rice fields, enjoy a traditional dinner, and stay overnight at a local homestay.

Day 2: Moc Chau via Mai Chau | 160 Km

Enjoy a leisure breakfast with a coffee before setting off on a mix of dirt tracks and muddy mountain roads. After a lunch stop in Mai Chau, home to the White Thai ethnic community, continue along road 6 and ride more off-road sections beside the Black river. The day ends on the Moc Chau Plateau in Son La Province, a highland area famous for its tea plantations, flower fields, and cool mountain climate. Stay overnight in Moc Chau.

Day 3: Ta Xua | 150 Km

Epic dirt roads, jungle single-tracks, rocky hillside climbs, stream crossings and breathtaking mountain top views are all about today off-road adventure. After breakfast in Moc Chau, ride east through the rural landscapes of Son La Province, following a mix of mountain roads and challenging off-road trails. Pass remote villages and forested hills before stopping for lunch at a local Vietnamese eatery.
Arrive in Ta Xua by late afternoon, a mountain area known for its dramatic ridgeline views and famous cloud hunting conditions. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight at a resort in Ta Xua.

Day 4: Dinosaur Spine, then Ngoc Chien | 160 Km

Today is one of the toughest off-road stages of the Northwest Vietnam adventure, with long sections of mountain tracks through Son La Province. First we check out the resort and then ride up the cloud covered valleys to conquer the Dinosaur spine and ride along the mountain Ridgeline. Then, we continue passing remote Tay, Dao, and H’mong tribal villages, crossing streams, rocky trails, and steep muddy climbs that become especially challenging in wet weather. Arrive very late in the afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay and before that, enjoy the hot spring to cure the sore after a hard day.

Day 5 & 6: Sapa via Mu Cang Chai terraced rice fields | 200 Km

Anther challenging day a head of us once we head out the trails, jungle crossing , deep stream and off-road trails around Mu Cang Chai toward Tan Uyen before ascending 1800 meters above the sea level to ride across the O Quy Ho pass for the final leg of the ride to Sapa. Arrive and check in, we deserve a massive rest here with sauna and good massage.
The next day is for rest and recovery and or optional visits in Sapa.

Day 7: Thac Ba Lake | 230 Km

Enjoy breakfast surrounded by the mountains and forests of Northwest Vietnam, with views of valleys, clouds, flowers, and the colorful traditional clothing of local ethnic communities. Leave Sapa and follow muddy mountain tracks toward Pho Lu, then continue on road 70 to Thac Ba Lake in Yen Bai Province, one of northern Vietnam’s largest hydroelectric reservoirs. Arrive and check in, if time permits, we take an optional boat ride along the lake.

Day 8: Drive back to Hanoi | 200 Km

After check out at Thac Ba Lake, ride south on National Highway 2 toward Phu Tho Province. Follow the dike roads along the Red River where we will enjoy an hour of off-road along the Banana forest. Here we continue red river to Hanoi, marking the end of the 8 day ultimate off-road around the Northwest Vietnam.
