FAQs: Motorbike holidays in Vietnam
Can You Use an International Driving Permit in Vietnam?
Can I Legally Ride a Motorbike in Vietnam with an International License?
Yes, you can ride a motorbike with an International Driving Permit (IDP), as long as you also carry a valid license from your home country. However, the rules are not the same everywhere in Vietnam.
In Northern Vietnam, most police accept international licenses with an IDP. But in some central and southern provinces, local authorities may ask for a Vietnamese motorbike license. The laws vary by region and often change without clear updates from the government.
That said, after over years of riding and running tours across Vietnam, we can say this: police rarely stop tourists who ride safely and follow traffic rules. If you ride with a guide, wear a helmet, and respect speed limits, you’re unlikely to have any issues—even without a local license.
Important: While you may ride legally, most travel insurance companies will not cover motorbike accidents unless you have a Vietnamese motorbike license. Always check your insurance policy before riding.
How's the traffic Like in Vietnam?
Not as bad as you may think. Many foreigners describe Vietnam’s traffic as an unusual they never seen before. It might look like there are no rules, but motorbikes and scooters clearly rule the roads.
All our holiday rides include local guides who know the traffic well. They will share tips to help you ride safely and confidently. We also plan custom routes to avoid big, busy roads whenever possible—so you can enjoy the ride without stress.
How to Get Insurance for my trip?
The two biggest insurance companies in Vietnam are Bảo Việt (the national insurance company) and Gras Savoye Willis (a French insurance broker). They are well-known, but they don’t cover motorbike accidents if you don’t have a Vietnamese motorbike license.
Getting a Vietnamese motorbike license or converting your home license is complicated. You need at least a 3-month resident visa, and you must handle the paperwork in person. It usually takes 5 to 7 working days to complete.
Because of this, it’s best to buy travel insurance in your home country before starting a motorbike tour in Vietnam. Make sure your policy covers riding a motorbike abroad.
How Much Experience Do I Need to Join a the Motorcycle trip?
You may surprise, but you don’t need a lot of experience to ride a motorbike here in Vietnam. If you’re joining our trips, we will have a briefing and will share you all the tips, tricks and best possible ways to ride in Vietnam.
Can I Join a motorbike ride If I’ve Never Ridden Before?
Yes, you can. Some of our riding experience are optimized for beginners who have never ridden before. These tours include basic training and safety tips to help you ride with confidence. On our e-mail conversation, we will make sure you’re ready for a ride, if not, we will train you and our guide will take care of you. In addition, we do offer pillion riding tour.

What are my options for Motorbike holidays in Vietnam?
A lot of options, when you’re looking for a motorbike holiday that really lives up to the promise, consider gearing up for routes like the loop from Hà Giang in the far north or the sweeping ride between Hue and Đà Nẵng via the iconic Hải Vân Pass.
Take the Ha Giang Loop: starting in Ha Giang city and circling through towns like Yên Minh, Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc, often via the famous Mã Pì Lèng Pass, you’ll ride for 3 to 5 days (covering about 300–500 km) through remote valleys, limestone peaks and ethnic-minority villages. Riders reported: “I just finished a 4-day motorbike trip along the Ha Giang Loop … and wow, I have no words. Fog-covered mountain passes, rice terraces that stretch forever, and the kindest people I’ve ever met.” It’s raw, it’s immersive, and it’s not for the faint-hearted; narrow roads and hairpins demand focus.
Central coast roads
Then there’s the Hue, Da Nang ride over the Hải Vân Pass. It’s shorter, you can do it in a day, but it packs in so much: coastal views one side, forested peaks the other, and a road that winds like a ribbon of possibility. One traveller noted: “The Hai Vân Pass was quoted the most beautiful coastal road in the world, I had goosebumps the whole way.”
Indeed the pass is often called “one of the best coastal roads in the world.” Whatever route you pick, the magic comes from real experience, rising early, feeling the engine hum, making a spontaneous stop at a village, chatting with locals, absorbing the landscape. A holiday on two wheels in Vietnam becomes more than sight-seeing: it becomes a living story.
